Overview

 Critical care medicine is a superspeciality which deals with the treatment of patients with life threatening conditions. Such patients are managed in a sophisticated and technologically advanced critical care unit. Critical care unit is manned by critical care physicians also known as intensivists, who are experts in managing such life threatening conditions. Such life threatening conditions include sepsis, ARDS, pneumonia, pulmonary edema, heart failure multiorgan dysfunction, shock due to any etiology, poisoning, polytrauma, pregnancy related complications, etc. In critical care, various modalities used to support such patients include intubation, invasive and non invasive ventilation, oxygen therapy, central venous and arterial cannulation, bronchoscopy, percutaneous tracheostomy, extracorporeal therapies etc Critical care unit in Sree Gokulam Medical College is an eight bedded closed unit, located in the superspeciality ICU complex located in the -1 floor. Each bed has an advanced multichannel monitor. Ventilators by Hamilton and Mindray with most advanced modes and specifications including provision for transpulmonary pressure monitoring, are used in the unit. Ultrasonography, ECHO and bronchoscopy facilities are available at the bedside.  Critical care department extends its services to other ICUs also. Critical care department in SGMC assures 24*7 intensivist coverage. To assist them, one junior resident doctor will be there in the floor round the clock. This facilitates timely treatment and continuous monitoring of unit occupants. The critical care team includes ICU trained nurses, patient counsellor, respiratory therapists, dietician, physiotherapists, clinical pharmacists and infection control team.

Nursing care is provided by highly competent nurse providers who are BLS and ACLS certified. 1:1 nursing care is provided to all critical patients. Critical care unit boasts of humanized care. Our motto is holistic care with compassion. We encourage the presence and participation of relatives in patient care. Critical care team provides emotional and psychological support for the family also. Critical care unit also has a post ICU clinic to detect and address post ICU syndrome. Our team thus provides the highest level of care, for both the patients and relatives, throughout the time of difficulty.
