In May 2006, the department was set up with outpatients, inpatients and endoscopy services. Within the first two years, it has developed into a centre for research and clinical trials and was accepted by the FDA for major national and international clinical research. In 2012, the FDA inspected the department and it passed all the criteria for a clinical trial centre.
