Community Medicine

Overview

Community Medicine deals with health care issues affecting communities as a whole, with an emphasis on preventive measures at various levels. It seeks to alleviate health problems by finding comprehensive solutions that address not just medical, but social issues.

The department strives to sensitize students to the various factors influencing health, healthcare and healthcare seeking behavior. Students are provided hands-on experience in survey techniques and research. They are also involved in health care at the community level, implementation of national health programmes and health education activities.

Goals

  • To create doctors who can be empathetic and caring while effectively functioning as healthcare providers, decision makers, effective communicators, community leaders and health care managers in rural and urban settings.

Faculty

The Department of Community Medicine at SGMC is headed by Dr. Jeesha C Haran, having more than 25 years of teaching experience. In addition, the Department has 5 Professors, 1 Associate Professor, 1 Assistant Professors, 1 Epidemiologist, 1 Biostatistician and 5 Tutors –more

  • Research Laboratory with equipment for intramural and extramural research activities

Services

Peripheral Health Centers

  1. Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC), at Attingal
  2. Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC), at Kallara

 

Apart from UHTC and RHTC, there are two more State run functional Rural Health Centers (Community Health Centres): Mudakkal-PHC and Pullampara-PHC attached to the Department of Community Medicine. These centers help to orient medical students effectively on Primary health care, three tier health care system and National Public Health Programmes.
