Meeting on 25.09.06 : The next refresher course under MEU was decided to be held on  5.10.06 in Lecture Hall No.2.The Topic was Cardiac resuscitation.The speakers were to be Dr. Ajaya Kumar,Dr.Anil Roby and Dr.Binu.S.S.All the Junior Doctors and Charge sisters were instructed to attend the programme.
Meeting on 25.10.07 : A Training programme on Sudden cardiac Death was proposed to be held on 15.02.07 for lecturers, senior and Junior residentsand charge nurses of ICU. It was held from 11.am to 2.pm The speakers were Dr.Ajaya Kumar and dr. Anil Roby.
Meeting on 21.03.07: It was decided to conduct a CME programme on Hematemesis by Dr.K.T.Shenoy .It was held on 25.04.07 for senior and junior residents.
Meeting on 30.04.07:The members met on 30.04.07 decided to conduct a deliberation on Laparoscopy and minimally invasive surgery by dr.Baiju Senadhipan on 05.05.97 from 11 am to 2.pm
Meeting on 07.08.08 : It was decided to collect the details of the faculty members regarding

  1. Whether  traind in Medical Education Principles
  2. The details of training
  3. Whether willing  to work as faculty of MEU ,SGMC & RF

Accordingly a list of willing faculty members were prepared and sent to the dean and the Director Dr.O.Geetha,Associate Professor of Forensic Medicine was given charge of the co-ordinator.
Meeting on 12.11.08: The members decided to conduct a one day training programme on educational principles on 19.11.08 in the Conference hall.Twenty participants were selected from the list of fifty.The topics decided to be included were pretest,ice breaking session, lecture, Teaching Learning Media,Introduction to Microteaching, Lesson plan and Teaching Learning Methods.The sessions were to be followed by a post test.
Report on the Training programme on 19.11.08: It was conducted in the conference hall. The day began with a formal inauguration by the director ,Dr. K.K. Manojan by lighting the lamp. The Dean ,Dr.T.Chandrasekharan Nair in his speech pointed out the relevance of such programmes in future also. The participants evaluated each session in the feed back form and rated the sessions to be either very effective or effective Many of them requested for similar programmes and for detailed sessions on selected topics.
Meeting on 20.01.2009 : As per the direction of MCI to hold at least one scientific meeting on suggested topic of contemporary importance and relevance in the field of medical education in commemoration with the platinum jubilee celebrations of MCI, the members of MEU, SGMC & RF decided to conduct a one day CME programme, “ Medical Education-Focusing the future???. Faculty members from other colleges were also invited for the programme. The programme was inaugurated by Dr.V.Jayaprakash, Pro-VC , University of Kerala, Presidential address was made by our chairman, Sri.Gokulam Gopalan. Felicitation was by Mr.Baiju Gopalan (Executive director, SGMC & RF) and Dr.K.K.Manojan (Director, SGMC & RF). The sessions were handled by Prof.M.K.C.Nair (Director, Child Development Centre, SATH, Trivandrum) – Motivation of Low achievers, Dr.K.T.Shenoy (Prof & HOD of Gastroenterology, SGMC & RF)-Biomedical Research , Dr.Joy Philip (Principal, SUT Medical College)- communication skills in medical education, Dr.Sreekumari.S (Vice Principal, Jubilee Mission Medical College) – curriculum-planning and revision. Group discussion was held on “ Methods of improving the quality of Medical Education at Institutional level- Co-ordinated by Dr.K .Chandrakumari (Prof & HOD of Anatomy, SGMC & RF). The number of participants was around 125. The sessions were very lively as it was made interactive with question-answer sessions. All the participants were given certificate of participation.
A copy of the report was sent to the secretary , MCI and to the proposed observer of MCI
Meeting on 28.06.09 : As per the letter from Secretary, MCI it was decided to prepare a list of faculty members in our institution for the successful conduct of the Basic Course on Medical Education Technologies. The list was prepared and forwarded to the Secretary, MCI and to the director academic cell, MCI.
Meeting on 10.09.09 : In the meeting it was decided to conduct a four day training programme on educational principles from 22.09.09 to 25.09.09. Taxonomy and educational objectives on 22nd, teaching learning methods on 23rd, Principles of evaluation and evaluation techniques on 24th and Question paper setting and micro teaching sessions on 25th.
It was  conducted in the same pattern as suggested by the MCI, through letter No: MCI/Academic/2009/71-71 dated 24.06.09
Twenty three members successfully completed the course. Level of achievement by the candidates was assessed by comparing the pre and post test results.
Meeting on 15.12.10 : Medical Education Unit of SGMC & RF was constituted on 15.12.10 with Dr. V.Girija (Principal) as chairperson, Dr.Sreekumari. S (Prof & HOD, Biochemistry) Dr.K.Chandrakumari (Prof & HOD, Anatomy) Dr.P.Sivasankara Pillai (Prof & HOD, Forensic Medicine) as Members and Dr.Geetha .O (Associate Professor, Forensic Medicine) as the co-ordinator
It was decided to conduct a session on “ Psychological Aspects of Medical Education??? by Dr.K.A.Kumar (Professor & HOD, Psychiatry, SGMC & RF) for  1st year MBBS students. It was held on 21.12.2010 from 10.30 am to 11.20 am in Lecture Hall No 3. Dr.V.Girija , Principal was the chairperson for the session .Fifty first years students and eight faculty members participated.
On 23.12.2010 : A session on “Competency Based Education???was conducted with Dr.Sreekumari S , Professor&Head of biochemistry as the speaker and Dr.P.Sivasankara Pillai ,Professor &HOD of Forensic Medicine as the Chairperson.
On 12.01.2011 :A proposal for change in the UG  and PG Medical curriculum was forwarded to the MEU by the convenor of the  MCI Regional Centre,Govt Medical College ,Kottayam and suggestions were sought. The members of the MEU,SGMCRF had decided to hold a Panel Discussion on this matter with co-ordinators of each year as the panelists and Dr.P.Sivasankara Pillai as the moderator .The programme was held on 12.01.2011 from 1.00-4.00pm . All the departments were represented by senior faculty members and fruitful discussions took place .The suggestions were compiled and sent to the Mci regional Centre ,Govt Medical College , Kottayam and to the medical Council of India through feedback@mciindia.org .The same document was forwarded to the Vice chancellor , Kerala University of Health Sciences as per the direction of Dr.S.Sreekumari , Prof &HOD of Biochemistry who represented our college in the meeting held at KUHS , Thrissur .
From 22.04.2011 to 25.04.2011 (4days) : A four day workshop on Medical Educational Technologies was conducted with fifteen faculty members of this college as participants.
On 21.06.2011 : A session on “Effective Powerpoint Presentation??? was held by Dr.Anoop Sinha , Associate Professor of Microbiology .Dr.M.S.Subhadra , professor of Anatomy chaired the session .Forty six faculty members had participated .
Meeting on 16.06.2011 : Dr.P. Sivasankara Pillai. Prof &HOD , Dept of Forensic Medicine, Former Director of Medical Education ,Kerala ,has given the statement showing the requirements in the Skills Lab to be established .
  10.02.2012 : Mr. Naveen of Medical Resources India ,Private Limited, after installing the manikins in the Skills Lab  gave a  demonstration of manikins .
22.02.2012 : A session on  “Time management??? was conducted for the        I year MBBS students(2011 Admission )  . The speaker was  Dr. P. Sivasankara Pillai , HOD of Dept of Forensic Medicine and Former DME . I49 students and 16 faculty members had attended the programme .
 29.03.2012 : Dr.Janaki.K.N  , Associate Professor , Clinical Psychology, Govt: Medical college ,Trivandrum  gave   a talk on “Stress Management??? to the 62 participants comprising of fcaulty members from both Sree Gokulam Medical College &Nursing college  , House surgeons and PGs. Dr.K.A.Kumar , Professor &HOD of Psychiatry ,SGMCRF chaired the session .
23.08.2012 : As per the MCI stipulation,  the I year MBBS students (2012 batch)  were given an awareness about the “History of Medicine??? by Dr.Presenjit Raut , Associate Professor of Pharmacology , SGMCRF . 140 students had attended the session .

17.09.2012 : It was decided to give the I year MBBS students an exposure to “How to approach Under Graduate Medical studies??? at the beginning of their course itself considering the feed back of the previous batch students . The speaker was Dr. P. Sivasankara Pillai , HOD of Dept of Forensic Medicine and Former DME. 140 Ist  year students of 2012 Admission had attended .
20.09.2012 :Demonstration of Electronic Board Attachment was done by the Technical staff of the concerned agency.Twenty fcaulty members of this college had attended .
From 19.12.2012 to 21.12.2012(3 days )  :  The Ist  MCI Approved Basic Course workshop of Medical Education Technologies  was conducted for the faculty  members of this college under the supervision of  MCI observers ; Dr.R.Sajith Kumar ,Convenor , MCI Regional Centre ,Kottayam , Dr.Radha   and Dr.Lillykutty Pothen (GMC,Kottayam).Thirty two faculty members had participated.

23.09.2013 : First year MBBS students of 2013 Admission (150 nos: ) were given a sessions on “History of Obstetrics and Gynecology “ by Dr.Manjusha Viswanathan , Associate Professor of Obstetrics &Gynecology ,SGMCRF .

07.10.2013 :First year MBBS students of 2013 Admission (150 nos: ) were given a sessions on “History of Medicine “ by Dr.Anil Roby  ,  Associate Professor  of General Medicine   ,SGMCRF .
From 11.12.13 to 13.12 .13(3days) :The Second  MCI Approved Basic Course workshop of Medical Education Technologies  was conducted for the faculty  members of this college under the supervision of  MCI observers ; Dr.R.Sajith Kumar ,Convenor ,  Dr.Usha Pothiyode   and Dr.Lillykutty Pothen(MCI Regional Centre ,Kottayam) .Forty one  faculty members had participated.
Received the observers’ report about the Workshop from the Medical Council of India.In the MCI  Observer’s remarks the following are noted ,???Very committed faculty and delegates .Excellent support from the administration . Even though the participant strength was a little higher , the participation and interaction were maintained at a very efficient level .All positive for this course organisation.???The Convenor of the Regional Centre suggested few more workshops in view of the increasing demand .
24.02.2014&25.02.2014  : The I year students were given CPR training using Mannequins in the Skills Lab attached to MEU by the Department of Physiology Dr.Greeshma S (Asst.Professor ) & Dr.Praseeda S (Asst.Professor ).
June -July 2014 : The third MCI Approved Basic Course workshop on Medical Education Technologies will be conducted on three days during June /July .The proposal has been forwarded to the MCI for approval ,through the Regional Centre Awaiting reply from MCI and Regional centre .

Feed back from the participants of different work shops

 

At the beginning and end of each workshop pre test and post test were conducted . After analyzing the pre test and post test results necessary modifications in the topics made .
In addition to this Daily evaluation sheets were given to each participant and feed back taken .

Feed back from the participants of  Workshop on Medical Education Technology including Teaching learning Methods , Media , Educatioinal objectives , Question paper setting , Evaluation techniques etc  were as follows ;

1.Teacher’s training programme should be made mandatory once in a year .
2.Microteaching sessions should be conducted .
3. Time management should be proper while conducting sessions .
4. It would have been better if key points are given at the end of each session .
5. Senior faculty members should be included for taking sessions .
6. Such sessions are very useful , need to be given handouts /Cds at the end
7. Needs more time to cover the whole topics
8. Conduct such training programmes every year
9. Better ambience needed .

Actions taken

1. Every year MEU conduct such programmes
2.Microteaching sessions are conducted .
3. Time is properly maintained for the faculty members
4. Senior faculty members are included .

  1.  Number of days for the workshop has been increased to 3 days .
  2.  Booklets containing all the topics  are distributed at the end of each workshop.
  3. Microteaching sessions are conducted and feed back given by the senior faculty members and other participants .
